Threatening another showdown over product claims, a non-profit group has put Bayer on notice that a lawsuit will be filed charging the drugmaker with making “unsubstantiated and illegal claims” about the ability of its One-A-Day vitamin to prevent various diseases, such as breast cancer, bolster physical energy and improve immunity, among other things. As an example, the Center For Science in the Public Interest points to a web page offering tips for avoiding breast cancer. And the page states that taking One A Day women’s multivitamins formulated with a high level of Vitamin D can “support breath health.” But the non-profit says evidence that Vitamin D plays a role in preventing breast cancer is inconclusive and supplement makers are prohibited from making claims about disease prevention.
