A CEMENT-INJECTING technique for spinal fractures has the potential to prevent thousands of deaths, a study suggests. Doctors found that two different forms of the procedure reduced death rates by 44 per cent. Without the operation, more than 30 per cent of patients were no longer alive after two years because of complications such as blood clots and infections. Vertebral fractures, mostly caused by the brittle bone disease osteoporosis, affect more than 230,000 people each year in the UK.
