The Commission last week declared its intention to draw more attention on the field of Biotechnologies. The United Nation on Biodiversity defines this field as “any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use.” Commissioner Janez Potocnik, responsible for research and development, emphasised the importance of these points by saying: “Life sciences and biotechnologies are playing a vital role for the competitiveness of our industry but I see it also playing an important role in facing challenges such as the perils of oil dependence, global warming, food security and population health. Currently the industry employs 96500 people but this number is sure to grow with its responsibility in resolving many of the challenges that awaits us in the future.” >>> Discuss This Story
