CVS Caremark Merger Is Attacked by Pharmacists and State Lawmakers

AIS Health -- The 2007 merger of CVS Corp. and Caremark Rx, Inc. is coming under increased attack from community pharmacists and state lawmakers, who allege that the combined organization has engaged in anticompetitive conduct that harms consumers and pharmaceutical payers. CVS Caremark Corp. adamantly denies any of the wrongdoing alleged in the latest broadsides, and claims its programs are actually providing consumers with more access to drugs at lower costs. Some PBM observers tell DBN that critics’ efforts to revisit the merger, and perhaps add new conditions to it, are unlikely to gain traction.
