CDC-Funded Study Proves Germ-Killing Robot Tru-D SmartUVC Can Help Hospitals Achieve Greater Than 30 Percent HAI Reduction

Results of Benefits of Enhanced Terminal Room Disinfection Study, the first and only randomized clinical trial on UV disinfection, will be hot topic at IDWeek 2015

SAN DIEGO & MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Tru-D SmartUVC LLC achieves a major milestone at IDWeek 2015 in San Diego beginning today through Oct. 11 when the company will feature its most innovative UVC automated disinfection robot, which was the sole device used in the landmark Benefits of Enhanced Terminal Room Disinfection study. Results of this study, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and performed by researchers with the Duke Infection Control Outreach Network, will be presented at the conference by Deverick Anderson, MD, MPH, FIDSA, FSHEA, on Oct. 9 at 4:15 p.m.

“As health care leaders seek to consistently guarantee safe and disinfected patient environments, Tru-D continues to reduce health care-associated infections. It’s clear that Tru-D is alone in its affiliation with this method and device-specific study.”

According to the study abstract, enhanced terminal room disinfection strategies that utilized Tru-D SmartUVC reduced the risk of acquisition and infection caused by target multi-drug resistant organisms by greater than 30 percent (Daniel J. Sexton, MD, et al., 2015). These reduction rates, validated through the first and only randomized clinical trial of its kind, differentiates Tru-D from all other devices on the market.

This study is the most comprehensive research completed to date that assesses automated UVC disinfection systems and their ability to reduce infections. Tru-D was the only technology selected to be utilized due to its unique, proven ability to reduce environmental pathogens by measuring the necessary reflective dose required to completely disinfect a hospital room.

“We anticipated positive results of the BETR-D study and believe that the primary outcomes will set the standard for measured-UV technology in hospitals by being the most precise example of Tru-D’s ability to reduce infection,” said Chuck Dunn, president of Tru-D SmartUVC LLC. “As health care leaders seek to consistently guarantee safe and disinfected patient environments, Tru-D continues to reduce health care-associated infections. It’s clear that Tru-D is alone in its affiliation with this method and device-specific study.”

Infection control researchers from Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill collected data across nine hospitals and 24,589 eligible patients for 122,873 patient days. Researchers compared four different cleaning and disinfection scenarios: cleaning a room with quaternary ammonia; enhanced cleaning a room using quaternary products with the Tru-D system; enhanced cleaning with bleach only; and enhanced cleaning a room with bleach and the Tru-D system. Each hospital randomly rotated through the four cleaning protocols in each of the four seven-month phases.

In celebration of this landmark study and to further the company’s mission of eradicating HAIs and making hospitals a safer place for patients and staff, Tru-D leadership is donating one Tru-D robot to a hospital in the United States. Beginning Thursday, Oct. 8, hospitals may register to win at Tru-D.com/TeamTruD and the drawing for the robot will be held Dec. 7.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, health care-associated infections affect two million people every year, resulting in nearly 100,000 deaths and $30 billion in medical costs. These staggering numbers are driving health care leaders and institutions to invest in Tru-D technology to bolster their infection prevention programs, allowing them to reduce their infection rates, and maximize reimbursements. Additionally, Tru-D’s cloud-based data-tracking technology, iTru-D, transfers usage data to a customized portal to provide real-time results through concise graphics and exportable records.

Tru-D SmartUVC is the device of choice for nearly all of the existing independent research on UV disinfection technology. Tru-D’s combined automated measured dosing capabilities and real-time usage-tracking features make it the most precise and advanced automated UV disinfection system available that now is validated in achieving infection reduction goals. More than 300 Tru-Ds have been deployed to disinfect hospitals across the globe. For information and links to independent studies on Tru-D, visit www.Tru-D.com.

About IDWeek 2015™
IDWeek 2015TM is an annual meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), the HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA) and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (PIDS). With the theme “Advancing Science, Improving Care,” IDWeek features the latest science and bench-to-bedside approaches in prevention, diagnosis, treatment and epidemiology of infectious diseases, including HIV, across the lifespan. IDWeek 2015 takes place Oct. 7 through 11 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia. For more information, visit www.idweek.org.
