U.S. Vice President Mike Pence Continues Support Of Indiana’s Life Sciences Industry

DES MOINES, March 23, 2017 - BioSpace, the leading biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry news and career resource, has partnered with Indiana Biosciences Research Institute and over 20 dynamic Indiana organizations and educational institutions to bring the state’s life sciences industry to the national stage with the first-ever BioIndiana Hotbed map, an artistic representation of the region’s booming biotechnology and pharmaceutical economy. A framed print was presented to Vice President Mike Pence, a long-time advocate of the life sciences in his home state of Indiana, and will be proudly displayed in his office in the White House.

There are 1,687 life sciences companies in Indiana and 56,198 Indiana residents who are employed in the life sciences industry. Life sciences employees work in the following fields: drugs and pharmaceuticals, medical devices and equipment, agricultural chemicals and feedstock, medical, research and testing laboratories and biologistics. The Indiana life sciences industry contributes $63 billion in annual economic impact and $9.6 billion annually in product export. “Indiana has a robust, diverse life sciences ecosystem that is well known and championed here at home, but is not known outside of the state. Pulling together the BioIndiana Map was the perfect way for us to showcase many of the life sciences companies and academic institutions that contribute to the state’s strength in life sciences. We were honored to present a copy of the BioIndiana Map to former Indiana Governor and now Vice President Mike Pence as a thank you for his strong support of the life sciences industry,” remarked David Broecker, President and CEO of Indiana Biosciences Research Institute.

For over 30 years, BioSpace Hotbed Maps have highlighted thriving clusters of the life science industry, helping to attract investment, talent and additional resources to specific geographic areas in the United States and Canada.

“The iconic BioSpace Hotbed Maps have been defining the life sciences industry for decades and we are excited to be able to showcase so many innovative companies in the state of Indiana with this new map,” said Josh Goodwin, Managing Director, BioSpace.
