May 28, 2013 (Washington, D.C.) – Next February, The Endocrine Society, the world's largest and most active organization devoted to research on hormones and the clinical practice of endocrinology, will move its headquarters from Chevy Chase, Md., to the District of Columbia.
Founded in 1916, The Endocrine Society has more than 16,000 members from over 100 countries. The organization has expanded from three staff members 25 years ago to 90-plus today.
The Washington, D.C.-based Ezra Company’s president, Glenn Meltzer, and Mark Ezra, the firm’s chief operating officer, negotiated on behalf of The Endocrine Society in its acquisition of nearly 34,000 square feet of office condominium space – the entire sixth floor – at 2055 L St. NW in the Golden Triangle neighborhood.
The Endocrine Society engaged The Ezra Company, one of the leading commercial real estate firms in the nation that exclusively represents tenants, to identify alternative sites on one contiguous floor and in an urban environment near a Metro station and amenities.
Relocating to the District of Columbia was particularly appealing, as it would improve the organization’s ability to recruit and retain the best talent in the region, expand its financial resources and member services, and advance the organization’s visible leadership role in addressing significant endocrine-based public health issues, reducing health disparities, and supporting equity of care for all hormone-related disorders.
Meltzer, Ezra and their colleagues conducted extremely thorough financial analyses on the benefits of The Endocrine Society acquiring space versus leasing it.
“There are long-term financial and strategic advantages to owning,” Meltzer says, noting that 2055 L St. NW was an attractive and unique opportunity. “You normally don’t see floor plates of this size for sale in a downtown office condominium building. Everything came together quickly, and we were able to negotiate a competitive deal that made it economically feasible for our client to buy its new headquarters.”
John Heberlein, The Endocrine Society’s deputy executive director and chief operating officer, praised the high level of service provided by Meltzer and Ezra. “We negotiated an excellent deal, and our new headquarters will be the first the Society has owned in its nearly 100 years of existence,” Heberlein says.
Adds Scott Hunt, the group’s executive director and CEO, “We couldn’t be more excited to join the numerous other prominent health-care, scientific and non-profit organizations that already make Washington, D.C. their home. There is no better place to advance the Society’s advocacy agenda and lead positive change in health and science policy.”
