Quintiles Transnational Appoints Cardiac Safety Medical Director

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Quintiles Transnational Corp. today announced the appointment of Dhiraj D. Narula, M.D., to the position of Medical Director, Integrated Cardiac Safety Services.

Dr. Narula is a U.S. board certified cardiologist and electrophysiologist. He also is a member of the Royal College of Physicians in the United Kingdom and is on the faculty at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, India. At Quintiles, Dr. Narula will be responsible for the overall medical direction and quality of Quintiles’ ECG services.

“The addition of Dr. Narula’s skills, credentials and research experience to our already strong team is especially important for the expansion of our cardiac safety services to meet the growing needs of our customers,” said David Dworaczyk, Senior Vice President, Integrated Technologies, Quintiles. “Quintiles is raising its cardiac safety capabilities to a new level throughout our service continuum, from preclinical testing, Phase I, clinical development, registration and post-marketing safety surveillance.”

In addition to his cardiology and electrophysiologist certifications, Dr. Narula is widely published, with numerous articles in such journals as the New England Journal of Medicine, American Heart Journal, European Heart Journal and Indian Heart Journal. Although he will work full time with Quintiles, Dr. Narula plans to continue to see patients through his hospital affiliation in Mumbai.

“I am joining a highly experienced and skilled team at Quintiles,” said Dr. Narula. “I look forward to working with the team to help customers better understand the cardiac safety profiles of their products and to help advance the science behind QT prolongation.”

In the last 10 years, regulatory agencies have withdrawn from the market or denied approval to several drugs that adversely affect the heart, prolonging what is called the QT interval. The QT interval measures the duration of ventricular repolarization. A prolonged QT interval can lead to a potentially fatal arrhythmia. The International Conference on Harmonization has proposed guidelines that, when finalized, will require that all drugs, regardless of therapeutic area, be thoroughly evaluated for cardiac safety.

Quintiles’ ECG services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year with a full-time cardiologist on staff at all times. Quintiles’ international ECG Helpdesk also is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, supporting more than 35 different languages.
