Pittsburgh’s Ohio Valley General Hospital Plans 50,000 Square-Foot Expansion

KENNEDY, Pa., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- In a continuing effort to maximize its service to the community, Pittsburgh’s Ohio Valley General Hospital (Ohio Valley) will break ground on the expansion of its Maternity & Surgical Services Wing on Monday, March 21, in an 8:00 a.m. ceremony at 25 Heckel Road in Kennedy Township, near the intersection of I-79 (Crafton/Moon Exit) and PA Route 60. The initial phase of the project, including erection of the steel frame and work on parking areas, will be completed in July 2005, and the new building will be finished by June 2006. Pittsburgh-based Burt Hill Kosar Rittleman Associates, Inc. designed the addition, and Burchick Construction Company will serve as general contractor for Phase One.

“Our new wing will have state-of-the-art equipment, and the outpatient, operating and recovery rooms will all be located on the same floor, making the setup more patient-friendly than ever,” says William F. Provenzano, FACHE, Ohio Valley’s president. “The expansion will also free up space within the hospital to add new services or increase our ability to provide existing ones.”

The maternity unit being replaced is housed in a building that was constructed in 1949, and the operating room is located in a building that dates from 1963 and was renovated in 1979.

Performance-Based Optimism

“Our construction of maternity and surgical wings despite this region’s declining population, and the increasing difficulty for obstetricians to obtain malpractice insurance in Pennsylvania, exemplifies our belief in the future of Greater Pittsburgh,” says Provenzano. “At a time when many community hospitals have chosen to discontinue maternity service, forcing families to travel Downtown for care, we have chosen to invest in this service and keep it in the community because it is something that people need, and want, close to home.” Adds Provenzano, “We look forward to maintaining the region’s highest levels of healthcare quality and efficiency as we continue to serve people in Pittsburgh’s western suburbs.”

Avatar International, Inc., an Orlando-based healthcare research and consulting firm, recently underscored Ohio Valley’s commitment to providing high-quality healthcare by giving the hospital its second consecutive top ranking in the category of “Consistently Exceeding Patient Expectations” based on the results of patient surveys in Avatar’s 170-plus hospitals database.

Recently, Ohio Valley became the first hospital in the United States to implement an automated system that helps to ensure patients receive the right dosages of intravenous (IV) medications. The system also gives nurses, physicians and hospital pharmacists real-time access to patient information.

“Patients have a choice of hospitals they can use, and they have a lot of influence in determining whether we get more patients,” says Provenzano. “Besides providing medical care of the highest quality, we are always considerate, quick and flexible in dealing with our patients and their families. This combination of employing advanced clinical treatments with a personal touch is what differentiates us from other hospitals in this region, and throughout the country.”
