ALEXANDRIA, Va., April 29, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Diabetes Association will present the Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award to Pere Puigserver, PhD. Supported by an unrestricted educational grant from Lilly USA, LLC, this prestigious award recognizes research in diabetes that demonstrates particular independence of thought and originality. Dr. Puigserver will be recognized with this honor at the Association’s 75th Scientific Sessions®, taking place June 5-9, 2015, at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in Boston.
Currently Professor of Cancer Biology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School, in Boston, Dr. Puigserver has made outstanding contributions identifying the molecular components and mechanisms involved in nutrient-regulated metabolic processes. The work of Dr. Puigserver’s laboratory has provided fundamental new information for better understanding of metabolic diseases.
Through development and implementation of a variety of biochemical, cellular, genetic and metabolic approaches, Dr. Puigserver’s research has identified novel basic and evolutionarily conserved metabolic circuitries that involve sensing and communication of nutrients to signaling and gene programs associated with cellular metabolic reprogramming. When not properly regulated, these metabolic circuitries can lead to diabetes and other diseases; therefore, components of these pathways present potential therapeutic targets.
Dr. Puigserver will present the Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award Lecture, “Transcriptional Machineries that Control Glucose Homeostasis: Targets for Diabetes” on Monday, June 8.
