A physician entrepreneur at NeuroDigm has been granted a U. S. patent for an animal model of chronic pain created without direct trauma to a nerve. Mary Hannaman, the inventor, created a model mimicking the type of pain seen in the majority of persistent pain patients – pain without nerve damage. Such chronic conditions are usually of gradual onset and persist beyond three months, they can include post-surgical pain, whiplash injuries, persistent back pain, and repetitive trauma conditions.
