Medco’s Online Pharmacy Named Best Interactive Web Site For Seniors

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J., Aug. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Medco Health Solutions, Inc. , one of the nation’s leading pharmacy benefit managers (PBM), announced that its Internet pharmacy, http://www.medco.com/, was named the best interactive site and best eCommerce site for persons over age 50 by the Spring 2004 World Wide Web Mature Media Awards.

Medco.com was also awarded two Silver Awards in the “Healthcare Web site” and “Insurance Web site” categories. Medco.com was recognized for content, creative format, quality and relevance of information, ease of navigation, and the ability to attract and hold users’ interest.

“Approximately 60 percent of medco.com’s monthly user base is over age 50, so we have designed our site with simpler navigation tools, a streamlined ordering process and simpler language to make it even more convenient for those members to manage their pharmacy benefit via the Web,” said Tom Feitel, Medco’s senior vice president of eCommerce. “Being recognized with World Wide Web Mature Media Awards for the second consecutive season validates that our efforts are a success.”

The World Wide Web Mature Media Awards recognizes the best Web sites for older consumers and professionals, with the goal of providing a “seal of quality” for senior-related electronic information.

Launched in 1998, medco.com is designed to help its clients’ members fully understand and manage their prescription drug benefit. The site currently processes an average of 340,000 prescription orders per week. Traffic from monthly unique visitors exceeds that of Medco’s two largest PBM competitors combined. Medco processed 4.2 million prescription orders in the second quarter 2004 through medco.com, a 27 percent year-over-year increase.

Continued Feitel, “Medco.com is a useful tool for our clients’ members, but it also drives overall satisfaction with the benefit provider by fostering cost-saving strategies, such as educating members about generic medications and preferred formulary alternatives.”

Medco.com’s Generics Medication Resource Center helps members make informed choices and understand the value of generic medications by providing a comprehensive, searchable database of brand-name drugs and their generic equivalents. Consumers can look up their brand name medications to see if a generic is available, and registered Medco plan members can compare plan-specific costs for brand and generic medications.
