MAIN Medical Diagnostic Imaging Business Acquired By The Company’s Management Group

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The diagnostic imaging arm of MAIN (Mid-Atlantic Imaging Network) Medical, the region’s largest free-standing medical imaging network, has been acquired by a management and investment group led by president and CEO of MAIN Medical, Anthony Geramita. Mr. Geramita suggested that stricter imaging guidelines just recently issued by the region’s largest insurer, Highmark, would fit well with the new company’s operating plan. The new company took ownership of MAIN Medical’s imaging business effective August 16, 2004. Terms of the agreement have not been disclosed, but include acquisition of the five imaging centers, plus the Mobile Ultrasound Division that the former company operated, as well as retaining the rights to the MAIN Medical name.

According to Mr. Geramita, the acquisition is a natural progression for the company that he has been leading with a hand-picked management team and staff for the past two years. “We joined the company to improve the quality of patient care, while stabilizing the operations that had such tremendous growth since it started in 1985,” says Geramita. MAIN Medical was named to the Inc 500 list for two consecutive years and the Pittsburgh Business Times Pittsburgh 100 for five consecutive years. “We accomplished our goal and now want to continue the mission of being the area’s preeminent medical imaging centers,” he concluded.

The new MAIN Medical plans to continue its growth by opening more centers and developing partnering relationships with hospitals and other imaging providers in the region.

Highmark’s new privileging guidelines require five modalities and a full- time radiologist. This will likely alter the way most imaging centers operate and could provide patients restricted access to services. MAIN’s medical director and new executive vice president, Dr. Georgine DeMarino, agrees with Highmark that the new program can “improve the quality and appropriateness” of diagnostic imaging services for patients. “Our focus is on the patient,” she says, “and if you take care of that, the rest takes care of itself. In the end, those that do not have a care-focused philosophy simply may not survive.”

MAIN Medical will maintain its headquarters on Pittsburgh’s South Side. The company currently operates medical imaging centers in Monroeville, Harmarville, Greensburg, West Mifflin, and Coraopolis with a staff of 87. The centers provide diagnostic tests including x-ray, mammography, ultrasound, CT and other modalities.
