FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 18, 2004--James B. Golden III, Ph.D., who spent more than 10 years directing and developing bioinformatics programs for industry and academia, has joined Life Science Insights, an IDC Company, as Vice President for Research.
In his new position, Golden will guide all levels of technology research for Life Science Insights’ biotechnology and pharmaceutical clients and will also help increase its information technology coverage.
“Jim’s expertise in both the scientific and commercial aspects of the life sciences will be invaluable as we build the very best content in market research and analysis for our clients,” said Paul Gillyon, Chief Operating Officer and Managing Director of Life Science Insights. “Building on IDC’s 40-year track record, Life Science Insights delivers research and advisory services to life science companies with the same high level of integrity, reliability and market insight.”
Before joining IDC, Golden was Business Development Manager at 454 Life Sciences in Branford, Conn., a technology development spinout company focused on commercializing drug discovery and bioinformatics technologies created by its parent firm, CuraGen Corp. Golden’s role at 454 Life Science evolved from his position as Director of Bioinformatics, responsible for co-developing and managing CuraGen’s bioinformatics infrastructure for target-based drug discoveries.
Golden’s experience in drug discovery companies was preceded by a stint in agricultural genomics at Pioneer Hi-Bred/Dupont Biosolutions, where he was Coordinator for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Supervising a team of molecular and computational biologists, bioinformatics scientists and applications programmers, they developed bioinformatics programs to identify relevant genes and proteins involved in important plant traits. Golden also assisted in the creation of a graduate degree program for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at Iowa State University.
Golden’s career also included dividing his time between GeneSys Technologies Inc. in Sauk City, Wisc., which he co-founded and served as Director of Bioinformatics, and as a Computer Engineer and Instructor at the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School, Edwards Air Force Base in California. He holds the rank of Major in the U.S. Air Force Reserves and was a staff member of the Test Pilot School until 2001. At GeneSys, he helped develop and commercialize DNA sequencing technology spun out of the University of Wisconsin.
Golden currently serves on Bio-IT World Magazine’s Editorial Advisory Board (an IDG publication) and several scientific advisory boards. He has also published numerous articles on neural networks, artificial intelligence, drug discovery and DNA sequencing in peer-reviewed journals. Golden earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Vanderbilt University, a Master of Science Degree in Computer Science from the University of Tennessee, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn.
