HIPAA - One Year Later

DURHAM, N.C., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is nearly one year old, and the pharmaceutical industry has felt its impact. Some companies estimate a 25% drop in physician access for sales reps.

HIPAA’s guidelines affect nearly all of those involved in healthcare, regardless of their service or level of involvement. Because they fear violating part of HIPAA, many physicians have become cautious when dealings with sales reps. Nurses, nurse practitioners and receptionists have increased their guard and repeatedly attempt to reduce reps’ access to physicians.

Jon Hess, lead analyst for the report, said that there are a few things reps can do to get around the fears that HIPAA has instilled. “Reps must educate physicians on the specifics of HIPAA compliance and develop ways to detail physicians in offices that remain hesitant to allow reps access,” Hess said.
