Governor Schwarzenegger To Deliver Address To Life Science Community At CALBIO 2006 Tomorrow

SAN DIEGO, May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- BIOCOM, the association for the life science industry in Southern California, is proud to announce that Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will deliver his first major address to the state's life science community tomorrow at CALBIO, BIOCOM's thirteenth annual conference at the San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina at 12:30 p.m.

"Southern California's life science community leads the nation in innovation and the successful development of new therapeutics that are changing the face of healthcare," said Joe Panetta, president and CEO of BIOCOM. Southern California's life science community is responsible for developing many new therapeutics that are changing how doctors diagnose and treat diseases. From cancer, to diabetes, and autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis, companies with facilities in Southern California like Genentech, Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Amgen and Biogen Idec and are advancing how patients are diagnosed and treated.

In the San Diego region, there are approximately 39,000 employees in more than 500 life science companies, making it the largest technology cluster in the county. Statewide, there are more than 230,000 jobs in California associated with the life science industry in more than 2,600 companies, with $32.3 billion in revenue, according to the California Healthcare Institute.

The Governor's keynote address is scheduled to take place at 12:30 p.m. on May 18, 2006 at the San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina.
