GlazMed International, Inc., Release: Nashville To Host Official Launch Of The First All-Inclusive Professional Medical Society In Russia

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- GlazMed International, Inc., a non-profit Nashville-based organization dedicated to the dissemination of medical knowledge, technology and information, is pleased to announce an historic and unprecedented collaboration between the U.S. and Russia -- the establishment of the all-inclusive Inter-Regional Association of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Edward F. Cherney, M.D., of the Tennessee Ophthalmology Consultants in Nashville, a renowned ophthalmologist, educator and scholar, and founder and Chairman of GlazMed International, Inc., was officially appointed to the board of Inter-Regional Association of Ophthalmology - Russia and holds the position of International Liaison. He will serve as the link between Russian Ophthalmology and American Ophthalmology for the standardization of medical education and patient care.

“We are pleased to announce the formation of the Inter-Regional Association of Ophthalmology of Russia. This is important because this is the first National Medical Association in Russia dedicated to the education of all doctors in its specialty,” stated Dr. Cherney. “This association is also the formal vehicle for Russia to join the international Ophthalmology community.”

Dr. Cherney is a third-generation physician whose father, the late Dr. Leonid S. Cherney of San Francisco (creator of Cherney’s Incision), immigrated to the United States from Russia shortly after the Russian Revolution. His Tennessee Ophthalmology Consultants practice consists of retina clinics throughout Middle Tennessee. Their motto is “Honor God - Help People.”

Dr. Edward F. Cherney has hosted numerous Russian delegations of Ophthalmologists to the United States and was the first Westerner to address the St. Petersburg Ophthalmologic Society in 1992 and the third non-member physician to address the St. Petersburg Ophthalmologic Society since the 1917 revolution. He was honored with lifetime membership in the St. Petersburg Ophthalmologic Society and is an Honored Professor at Pavlov State Medical University in St. Petersburg. He was awarded the “Doctor of Honorable Causes Award” for advances to health care in Russia in 1998. Only 16 recipients in the last 100 years have received this award and no more will be awarded for another 25 years.

Dr. Yuri Astakhov, M.D., is the founding board member of Inter-Regional Association of Ophthalmology - Russia, member of the Board of Chair of Ophthalmology at the I.P. Pavlov State Medical University in St. Petersburg, Russia, member of the Medical Ministry of St. Petersburg and the Oblast (county) of Leningrad and Vice-Chairman of GlazMed International, Inc. He will announce the formation of the Inter-Regional Association of Ophthalmology during his address to the American Academy of Ophthalmology at their annual meeting in New Orleans next week.

According to Dr. Astakhov, “Dr. Cherney organized and led the first international medical meeting in Russia in 1994. Through his dedication and work, these conferences have overcome many cultural barriers and differences between our two countries. This is a wonderful example that the truest and strongest form of diplomacy is based on the deeds and goodwill of individuals.”

Upon their return from the American Academy of Ophthalmology annual meeting, Dr. Astakhov and his colleague, Dr. Evgeny A. Egorov, M.D., member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Special Advisor to The Health Council of Russia, Professor, Russian State Medical University in Moscow, and founding board member of the Inter-Regional Association of Ophthalmology - Russia, will make an official visit to Nashville where they will host a press conference. The event, which will include distinguished guests and leaders from the public and private sectors, will be held at The Hermitage Hotel, 231 Sixth Avenue, North, on Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, from 5:00 - 5:30. A cocktail reception will follow at 5:30 p.m.
