BCA/hemerica Chooses Sysmex Hematology Instrumentation For Enhanced Quality Control And Donor Screening

MUNDELEIN, Ill., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Sysmex America today announced that it has received a contract to supply its pocH-100i and Sysmex XE- 2100D(TM) hematology analyzers to Blood Centers of America in their blood processing centers and donor collection sites across the country. The XE-2100D will be used for quality control testing of prepared components such as packed red cells and platelet packs, while the pocH-100i will be used to screen donors so that donor center personnel can determine potential platelet yields from individual donors.

"Working with BCA, we designed the pocH-100i instrument software for use in blood donor centers, by giving it the ability to do discrete reporting on platelet counts," said John Kershaw, President of Sysmex America, Inc. These discrete counts are used to program the blood collection devices in order to optimize donor collection time. "Everyone benefits here - the donor, the recipient and the blood center itself," he added.

"BCA is particularly excited about the application of the pocH-100i in blood center fixed sites and mobile units where platelet pheresis procedures are performed. This device will enable us to improve our service to both patients and donors. It will help maximize the therapeutic benefit that can be derived from each pheresis procedure by accurately determining platelet pre-counts that will help us determine the number of therapeutic doses that can be collected per procedure. This should provide greater satisfaction to the donor while making more lifesaving products available for patient needs," said Charlie Mosher, CEO of BCA.

On the blood processing side, quality control procedures on prepared components will be performed using the Sysmex XE-2100D to help ensure that the component will deliver the expected therapeutic benefit. The analyzer rapidly and accurately measures parameters such as hemoglobin, hematocrit (direct) and platelet count. The XE-2100D has the extended linearity capabilities required for the concentrated cell preparations that make up component therapy.

"These are highly reliable instruments," says Mr. Mosher of BCA. "Sysmex has also designed a special training program for us that will address the unique needs of personnel in both donor centers and processing centers."
