SoftMed Systems Awarded Patent For ChartScan(TM) By U.S. Patent & Trademark Office

WASHINGTON, Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- SoftMed Systems, a national leader in health information technology, today announced receipt of U.S. Patent No. 6,772,943 for ChartScan, which offers healthcare facilities a distinct process that eliminates manual indexing of patient files, streamlines the document management process and reduces documentation errors.

“SoftMed is proud of this recognition by the U.S. Patent Office,” says SoftMed Systems CEO Don Segal. “No other product has the unique capabilities of ChartScan. SoftMed has pioneered an approach to electronic forms management that saves time and resources. For the last 20 years, SoftMed has been creating solutions that assist healthcare facilities in achieving the electronic health record. We remain committed to utilizing innovative approaches to solving healthcare challenges and continue to lead the industry in creating new healthcare information management solutions through technology.”

ChartScan’s innovative design provides unique identifiers within the barcode of each patient file that connects the form to a particular patient and visit. This eliminates the lengthy process of manual indexing of files and decreases staff time by identifying documents in correct page order as well as alerting the user as to whether any pages or documents are missing from the chart. ChartScan enables healthcare organizations to automate patient records by granting faster access to patient information by capturing and storing documents at the point of patient encounter.

Dana Choate, RHIA, CHP, Director, Baylor Health Care System, Health Information Management Services noted: “Adding ChartScan enabled our center to achieve results that include eliminating misfiles with its automated indexing, reducing our record retrieval time in the Emergency Department by 92%, saving $90,000 in annual form expenditures, reducing release of information process time by 80%, ensuring image quality with rules-based automated sampling, and identifying missing documents. Basically, ChartScan, along with other SoftMed products in use, moved us toward our strategic goal of providing information access while supporting patient privacy.”

Carol Pierce, RHIA, HIM System Manager, Northwestern University Medical Center added: “The improvements to our document management process that we have achieved with ChartScan continue to give us an advantage in making sure patient files are accurate, complete and readily available.”

ChartScan is installed in several of the U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals,” including Baylor Health Care System, Dallas, TX and Northwestern University Medical Center, Chicago, IL. SoftMed is working to help over 1,500 healthcare organizations nationwide realize an E.H.R solution.
