American Diabetes Association Names Helen L. Mitternight Vice President Of Communications And External Relations

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Helen L. Mitternight has been named Vice President, Communications & External Relations of the American Diabetes Association, the leading non-profit health organization dedicated to preventing and curing diabetes and to improving the lives of the nearly 21 million children and adults in the United States currently living with the disease.

In this newly created position, Mitternight will be responsible for the development and implementation of effective nationwide communications strategies as they relate to the Association’s internal and external Communications, Online Services, and National Call Center. She also will represent the Association in strategic collaborations with other organizations.

Mitternight brings more than 25 years of experience in nonprofit and for- profit communications. She comes to the ADA from the American Psychological Association (APA), where she oversaw communications for approximately 80,000 practicing psychologists and was responsible for the execution of a major public education campaign on behalf of the APA’s 150,000 members. Previously, she was president of her own communications firm specializing in advocacy public relations with clients such as The Humane Society of the United States, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and Nike. Her public relations background also includes time spent at the White House and as a press secretary for two U.S. Congressman.

Mitternight received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from Marquette University. She also has extensive volunteer experience including serving as President of the International Association of Business Communicators’ Washington, D.C. Chapter and Chair of the Fairfax County School Board Health Advisory Committee.
