BENICIA, Calif., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- AcroMetrix Corporation announced today the release of their new daily run controls for herpesvirus testing at the Association of Molecular Pathologist’s Annual Meeting in Scottsdale, AZ. The OptiQual(TM) HSV-1, HSV-2 and EBV DNA external run controls are the first “ready to use” controls intended for use in assessing the performance of nucleic acid test procedures for the quantitative and qualitative determination of herpesvirus DNA.
Herpes viruses are double-stranded DNA viruses that cause common infections in humans, including herpes, CMV, chickenpox, shingles, mono, measles, and Karposi Sarcoma. The herpesviruses may live latently in a person for years or even decades without causing symptoms and then be activated and cause disease. Currently there are 8 known human herpesviruses.
“We are extremely excited about having this product available to support the research laboratories,” said Douglas Lunderville, Global Product Manager, AcroMetrix, “We look forward to releasing additional herpesvirus qualitative and quantitative products in the coming months.”
Human herpesvirus infections are endemic and sexual contact is a significant method of transmission for several viruses including both herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 (HSV-1, HSV-2). The increasing prevalence of genital herpes and corresponding rise of neonatal infection and the implication of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) as cofactors in human cancers create urgency for more accurate test methods and increased understanding of this complex virus family.
