A Harvard Trained MD-Cartoonist Provides Free Online Medical Information In The Form Of Cartoons

NORTHPORT, N.Y., May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Justin Grady Matrisciano MD, an internist and diabetes specialist, has fused his cartooning skills and medical expertise by creating free online medical teaching cartoons which enrich readers with useful medical information while entertaining as well.

Matrisciano, known as “Dr. Grady” on the web site CartoonMD(R).com, is a practicing internist who specializes in diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolism, having trained at Harvard’s clinical program at the Joslin Diabetes Center and the Lahey Clinic. Dr. Matrisciano developed an interest in cartooning and eventually fused his medical expertise with cartooning. After creating his characters and an initial panel of cartoons, he launched the site CartoonMD.com in July, 2004 -- aimed at both adults and kids. The doctor designs his cartoons to teach those without any medical background about medical conditions that affect them and their family members to allow them to better manage those conditions.

At CartoonMD.com, a visitor can read through a series of linked cartoons. After going through a few, one captures a fairly profound and lasting understanding of the medical condition with little effort. Dr. Grady has started with diabetes cartoons because “diabetes is a condition where a person cares for herself to a large degree, so patient understanding is crucial for management.” The current epidemic of diabetes makes these cartoons even more valuable. Diabetes will probably always stand as a centerpiece of his work, but Dr. Grady says he already has plans to expand far beyond diabetes alone. And in addition to the online material, Dr. Grady licenses the cartoons, has free posters available for downloading, gives live presentations, and provides custom material upon request.

CartoonMD.com’s material has already started to get the attention of both the adult and pediatric medical community. Diabetes educators and hospitals have already started to use the material to teach patients and are finding the format is really making a difference. Lorena Drago MS RD CDN CDE, President of the Metropolitan New York Association of Diabetes Educators says, “We’ve never seen anything like this before in patient teaching. Patients and educators will benefit tremendously from these cartoons.” Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis has started using the cartoons to teach its kids about diabetes, and other pediatric centers are starting to do the same.

CartoonMD.com brings experienced medical expertise to everyone’s level with a medium to which we can all relate to and which we can all enjoy -- cartoons. The doctor is “always in” at CartoonMD.com, and the “medical information goes down easy”.
