Restaurant Health Ratings Win Approval In San Francisco

Restaurants in San Francisco will be required to post health inspection reports under legislation approved by the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, and those earning high marks for cleanliness will win a merit symbol that also must be displayed. The ordinance, authored by Supervisor Tony Hall, passed on a 7-3 vote, with Supervisors Jake McGoldrick, Chris Daly and Gerardo Sandoval dissenting. Supervisor Tom Ammiano was absent from the meeting. The legislation grew out of a move earlier this year by Daly to use letter grades to rate restaurants based on cleanliness and public health standards -- a system used in Los Angeles.
