August 11, 2011 Bar Harbor, Maine — Maine Governor Paul LePage and other state officials visited The Jackson Laboratory on August 4 to see how one of Maine's largest employers is generating jobs on its own campus and throughout the state.

Gov. LePage, Senior Economic Advisor John Butera, DECD Commissioner George Gervais and others toured the nonprofit biomedical research facility and met with Executive Vice President and COO Chuck Hewett, Ph.D., Chair of Research Bob Braun, Ph.D., and Vice President for Advancement and External Relations Mike Hyde.

“The Jackson Laboratory has a long history in our state, generating more than 1,200 jobs in Hancock County and another 2,100 throughout Maine,” said Governor LePage. “I commend the level of commitment their staff has had in our state.”

"It was an honor to have Gov. LePage, senior members of his economic team and staff join us at The Jackson Laboratory," said Hyde. "We're proud to be an economic engine for Maine as well as a nationally renowned research institute that is dedicated to improving human health."

Highlights of the visit included viewing the Laboratory's new energy center, which will replace about 1.2 million gallons of fuel oil each year with Maine-grown wood pellets, and meeting with biomedical engineer Joan Malcolm-Albee, who is working with technology and manufacturing companies throughout Maine to commercialize new laboratory tools and techniques.

With 1,212 employees and 33 open positions, The Jackson Laboratory is the largest employer in Hancock County, and generates an estimated 2,145 secondary jobs in Maine. About 95 percent of the institution's $200 million budget comes from outside Maine, while at least 85 percent is spent in the state.

The Jackson Laboratory, founded as a cancer research center in 1929, is a nonprofit biomedical research institution and National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center based in Bar Harbor. Its mission is to discover the genetic basis for preventing, treating and curing human diseases, and to enable research and education for the global biomedical community.
