Some of the largest as well as the smallest local companies are among the fastest-growing biotech firms in the area over the past year, adding hundreds of employees to their payrolls. A survey of the most recent employment numbers provided by the companies finds that some of the state’s biggest biotechs, in fact, are seeing the fastest rates of growth. Case in point is Biogen Idec (Nasdaq: BIIB), which boosted its headcount by 1,350 — or 23 percent — since the beginning of 2013, now employing 7,300. A company spokeswoman said the new hires were in virtually all the company’s departments.
