FDA Panel To Hear New Data From Kaiser Permanente Experts On Drug-Eluting Heart Stents

OAKLAND, Calif., Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- On Friday, December 8th, Kaiser Permanente physicians will present new research based on Kaiser Permanente data gleaned from cardiovascular patients in the Colorado and Northern California regions to the Food and Drug Administration's committee looking into safety concerns being raised for patients treated with drug-eluting stents.

David J Magid, MD, MPH, a Denver-based emergency physician and medical director of the Kaiser Permanente Colorado Clinical Research Unit, will present the research to the Circulatory System Devices Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee. Dr. Magid will be joined by Ralph Brindis, MD, MPH, FACC a California-based interventional cardiologist and the senior cardiovascular advisor for The Permanente Medical Group of Northern California. Dr. Brindis is also clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and chief medical officer of the American College of Cardiology's National Cardiovascular Data Registry

The physicians will present on Friday, December 8, the second day of the two-day hearing. The meeting is open to the public. The committee will discuss and make recommendations regarding issues related to recent concerns surrounding stent clotting in patients treated with coronary drug-eluting stents. These stents are placed in patients who have received angioplasty to treat cardiovascular disease. The drug coated stents have been shown previously to be extremely effective in treating blocked coronary arteries compared to "bare metal" coronary stents. A drug-coating works to prevent scar tissue from building up and re-clogging the artery.

Dr. Magid and Dr. Brindis will be available for interviews following their presentation.
