MILWAUKEE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 18, 2006--Lechnologies Research Inc. today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the AfibAlert(TM) Atrial Fibrillation Monitor, a health-care provider prescribed ambulatory cardiac monitor for improved atrial fibrillation management. This lightweight, pocket-sized monitor is an ideal tool for the more than 2 million Americans who suffer from atrial fibrillation (AF), an erratic heart rhythm.

The AfibAlert(TM) monitor uses a proprietary computer algorithm to monitor for the presence of atrial fibrillation. To operate, the patient holds the small monitor with their hands, placing their thumbs on the raised pads. Each ECG test takes 45 seconds to complete and record. Testing also can be done using wristbands. When testing is complete, a red or green icon illuminates to indicate what action the user should take. The AfibAlert(TM) monitor stores the ECG data using a Cascading Memory(TM) system. As each new recording is taken, the oldest recording is discarded and the five most recent are saved. Patients transmit the latest recording(s) via the telephone or Internet so their health care provider can make informed decisions about treatment.
The AfibAlert(TM) Atrial Fibrillation Monitor is for patients who experience symptomatic or asymptomatic atrial fibrillation, who have a history of ablation, heart bypass surgery, or are taking certain heart medications.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s atrial fibrillation (AF) fact sheet, AF is the most common sustained heart rhythm disorder and increases the risk for heart disease and stroke, both leading causes of death in the United States. Atrial fibrillation occurs when the top right chamber of the heart quivers and causes a rapid and irregular beat. People suffering from AF may experience serious complications, even death, according to the CDC. The CDC advises patients to contact a healthcare professional immediately if they experience a rapid or irregular heart rate.
