Mumbai, 26th June, 2014: 15% of India’s total diabetic population develops Foot Ulcers resulting in approximately 45000 lower limb amputations annually. India today is known as the Diabetes Capital of the World owing to which foot diseases are rapidly rising and pose a serious threat to individuals suffering from Diabetes.
Keeping this grave concern in mind, ConvaTec a leading US based multinational company, offering innovative medical technology products in Advance Wound Management, Ostomy Care and Critical & Continence Care, started with the concept of ‘Advanced Wound Clinic and Limb Salvage Centers’, in leading hospitals across India. As on date, the company has launched two such centers, the second was announced today in association with M.S. Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, located at MSR Nagar, Bengaluru.
The clinics are well equipped with state-of-art technologies essential for prevention and healing of chronic foot ulcers. It is aimed at maintaining higher limb salvage rate comparable to the leading centers in the world, with facilities for assessing peripheral circulation and predicting wound healing.
While inaugurating the wound clinic, Mr. Naresh Reddy, President of M.S. Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, said “Our initiative with ConvaTec would be one of a kind venture that would create a specialty clinic focusing on Wound Management in the country. This synergy will initiate new benchmarks and best technological and medical trends in our country”. Speaking at the occasion Mr. Anand Shirur, Managing Director, ConvaTec India & China said “Through the ‘Advanced Wound Clinic’ we aim to bring the best facilities and wound management technology to patients. I am quite certain that it would change the way foot ulcers are perceived and treated in India.”
Commenting on the partnership, Mr. Anand Shirur further elaborated “An upsurge in incidences of limb associated complications necessitates the requirement for wound management and centres. This initiative will enable us to expand footprint for the benefit of the people across the country and fulfill the tenets of care required for foot diseases”.
These clinics are a ray of hope for patients suffering from foot and limb associated diseases. Amputations and complications are preventable, provided appropriate diagnosis and management is done at the right stage and with the launch of this clinic we aim to educate the patients and reduce these complications.
The Centre’s Wound Management Plan includes a standardized record of clinical assessment and etiology of the wound. The model of care would be to apply a stepwise approach implementing Advanced Wound Management modalities as a part of the wound care algorithm. All aspects of care from initial presentation to treatment and evaluation would be documented. Following assessment, treatment goals would be agreed with the patient and a time frame for their achievement set. Underlying factors which could influence the potential for wound healing would be addressed thus ensuring holistic and all round care as well as treatment.
