"This patent strengthens our growing intellectual property portfolio, as well as our position in the AED marketplace," said Garry Norris, vice president, marketing of Cardiac Science. "As the use of AEDs in public areas continues to expand, having an identifiable, easily accessible mounting unit can improve the life-saving potential of an AED. In an emergency, crucial seconds should not be lost hunting for a defibrillator. Furthermore, a dependable alarm that notifies other people close to the emergency situation can direct additional help to the rescuer and increase the likelihood of a life saving intervention."

Patent No. 7,020,520 covers various cabinet designs which involve a mechanism that triggers an alarm once the AED has been removed from the enclosure. The alarm is intended to alert those in the surrounding area that an emergency situation has occurred, improving the likelihood of additional assistance. The design also features a no-draw circuit that will not pull power from its battery until the AED is removed, protecting the battery for the critical moment.
