William Backus Hospital Chooses ClearCube PC Blades Over Thin Client And Traditional PCs

AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- ClearCube Technology, the market leader and pioneer in PC blade computing, today announced that The William W. Backus Hospital, an acute-care hospital in Norwich, Connecticut, has deployed ClearCube PC blades. With industry-standard Intel processors and the same user experience as desktop PCs, ClearCube PC blades were immediately compatible with the Stentor PACS and Meditech healthcare information systems, allowing Backus Hospital to install the PC blades without impacting the delivery of patient care or retrieval of patient information.

ClearCube PC blades have replaced traditional desktop PCs in patient rooms, at nursing stations, in ORs and in the ER. Through the use of PC blades, Backus Hospital is able to protect patient information by ensuring computer hard drives are in a secure data center; save critical space in operating and emergency rooms by removing bulky PCs; and contain airborne contaminants by eliminating PC fans that can spread them.

“We looked at thin clients and traditional PCs but the thin clients weren’t compatible with our PACS or Meditech systems and our ORs are sterilized after every use so in many cases the cleaning solvents damage the hard drives of the desktop PCs,” said Kevin Frederick, manager of technical services at Backus Hospital. “Our doctors and nurses need access to these critical systems and we needed something that worked with our current applications and didn’t require any user training to operate. The ClearCube PC blade solution was the only infrastructure that met our performance needs and worked with all our industry applications.”

At Backus Hospital, doctors need easy access to images and radiology reports and are using the Stentor PACS (picture archiving and communications system), which has been optimized for its technology infrastructure. Changing to a thin client requires additional testing, troubleshooting and engineering that often changes the user experience and results in lost productivity and diminished patient care. PC blades enable computers to be removed from the patient areas, leaving doctors and nurses only a monitor, keyboard and mouse. This eliminates PC fans that spread airborne contaminants and reduces heat and noise in emergency rooms, operating rooms, nursing stations and patient rooms.

“Selecting technology is a very difficult process that must be balanced with user need and the total cost of ownership. We wanted to deliver a technology strong enough to handle any application, that met the standards of our hospital care and that was remotely supported by our technicians,” said Ed Fisher, CIO of Backus Hospital. “With PC blades from ClearCube, our technicians never have to enter operating or examining rooms because they can switch and troubleshoot blades from our data center and our doctors and nurses have more space to work, less heat and noise, and a more reliable system. It’s been a win-win for everyone.”

“Hospitals are often searching for less invasive technologies that don’t require IT technicians to enter patient areas and interrupt doctors during exams or operations,” said Carl Boisvert, president and CEO of ClearCube. “Our PC blades let the IT department troubleshoot PCs from the data center and concentrate on researching and implementing the most advanced technologies for their facilities.”

ClearCube PC blades have been installed in many hospitals, including Northwestern Memorial Physicians Group, Medical Center of Central Georgia, Oklahoma Heart Hospital, Hinsdale Hospital, Duncan Regional Hospital and Edward Hospital.
