SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- VNUS Medical Technologies announced today the introduction of RFG2, its next generation radiofrequency (RF) generator used in the Closure procedure. The RF generator is a significant element of the Closure System and is used in conjunction with the Closure PLUS catheter for the treatment of saphenous vein reflux -- often an underlying cause of painful varicose veins. The Closure procedure can be performed with local anesthesia as an outpatient or doctor’s office procedure, and has previously been shown in multiple randomized clinical trials to offer advantages over traditional vein stripping.
The next generation VNUS radiofrequency generator features continuous monitoring of vein wall temperature and impedance during the procedure, as well as a large color screen, newly designed user interface, enhanced audible tones, a multimedia card for easy software upgrades, and a new contemporary look.
With the addition of this new product, VNUS continues to improve and expand its portfolio of solutions to treat venous insufficiency. VNUS also provides the Closure PLUS RF delivery device, Closure procedure packs and accessories, VarEx, a line of instruments used to perform ambulatory phlebectomy, and compression stockings through a partnership with Venosan North America. With the introduction of the new RF generator, patients will continue to enjoy the advantages of the Closure procedure -- which, according to papers published in the Journal of Vascular Surgery, include shorter recuperation time, less postoperative pain and bruising, faster return to normal activities, and quicker return to work compared to traditional vein stripping surgery.
Brian Farley, VNUS Medical Technologies’ President and CEO said, “VNUS’ new radiofrequency generator provides significant benefits for both new and existing users of the Closure System. New users will appreciate display information that constantly shows treatment parameter values and the recommended range. Both existing and new users of the Closure System can benefit from the ‘always on’ measurement and display of vein temperature and impedance.”
About The Closure Procedure
The Closure procedure is a minimally invasive alternative for the treatment of superficial venous reflux, the underlying cause of varicose veins, leg pain, fatigue and swelling. The Closure procedure involves a thin catheter that is inserted into a diseased vein to controllably deliver radiofrequency energy to heat the vein causing it to collapse and seal as the catheter is slowly withdrawn. The catheter is connected to a radiofrequency generator that constantly controls the vein temperature to guide effective therapeutic heating and sealing of the vein. The Closure catheter and procedure provide a highly durable and effective minimally invasive alternative to vein stripping surgery. The Closure procedure is also the only minimally invasive venous procedure proven in comparative clinical trials to reduce post-operative pain and recovery time compared to vein stripping surgery.
