Design News’ industry leading editors worked diligently to go through the many entries received to identify the products most deserving to be on the list of finalists. The finalist entries were then sent to the entire editorial team, as well as a distinguished Advisory Board to choose the winners. Valtronic’s CEO, Martin Zimmermann accepted the award on Valtronic’s behalf. Valtronic’s CMO, Jim Ohneck and Andreas Jenny, Head of Division at mb-microtec ag, our development partner for Glass Encapsulation also attended the Award Ceremony.

“Winning this award is a testament to the hard work and ingenuity the technical team delivered to make this technology possible,” stated Martin Zimmermann. “Glass Encapsulation provides the foundation to significantly change the size of electronic implants and prolong their life resulting in less invasive procedures and improved quality of life for patients.”

Glass Encapsulation has been used in other high-tech industries and is a proven technology. Hermetic Glass Encapsulation provides a totally leak-proof housing for an implant. Glass-sealed packages are used mostly in critical components and assemblies solving several problems in the development and manufacture of active implants due to its strong properties and extended life.

Active Implants are Class III electromechanical medical devices functioning in the human body. Challenges of Active Implants include: electronic autonomy, the size, its imperviousness to body fluids and biological interfaces. To address these challenges active implants require a battery or power system, miniaturization of electrodes and encapsulation of the components to protect and preserve the properties and functions of the implant.

“We are excited to be recognized by Design News,” exclaimed Martin. “Glass Encapsulation has sparked significant interest among implant companies and we are excited to be working on some innovative new projects employing the technology.” Andreas Jenny of mb-microtec ag added, “Working with Valtronic as a partner provides true potential to make an impact in the Medical Device market.”
