WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announced today that it has selected Tompkins Builders, Inc, of Washington DC, to construct the new Physics Laboratory for the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) at the White Oak Federal Research Center near Silver Spring, Maryland.
The contract award marks the beginning of the third phase for FDA’s consolidation on the new White Oak campus. With 135,000 square feet of laboratory space, the facility will accommodate the FDA Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH). The CDRH laboratory will be supported by the forthcoming CDRH office building, currently under design.
“The new FDA campus is going to be a vital source of economic activity in suburban Maryland,” commented Donald C. Williams, Regional Administrator for GSA’s National Capital Region. “GSA is working closely with local government and with the community to make this project a success.”
The laboratory initiates and supports efforts that develop new scientific methods and regulatory testing for radiological devices and services, and provides scientific and laboratory support for their review, postmarketing surveillance, compliance, and other FDA actions. It will house approximately 145 people. Cost of the building and the accompanying service tunnel is $41.3 million.
When finished, the White Oak FDA campus will house more than 7,700 employees. It is replacing outdated existing facilities, scattered throughout suburban Maryland, with 3 million square feet in the consolidated campus. It will also support FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, Center for Biologic Evaluation and Research, Office of Regulatory Affairs, and Office of the Commissioner.
“GSA is pleased with the steady progress we are making in creating an entirely new FDA campus,” commented William J. Guerin, Deputy Assistant Regional Administrator. “This is an enormous undertaking that will greatly enhance FDA operations.”
