SACRAMENTO, Calif., June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Sacramento HeartScan has announced the installation of its new 64-slice computed tomography (CT) scanner, replacing the center's 16-slice equipment.
"Our entire staff is excited about this important acquisition," said Dr. Raye Bellinger of Sacramento HeartScan. "The speed and accuracy of the 64-slice scanner brings a new standard of care to the Sacramento area."
The 64-slice CT scanner received publicity last fall when Oprah Winfrey revealed the results of her own CT heart scan (CT angiography) on her national television show. Oprah's scan revealed that her heart was healthy and had no calcium build-up in the arteries and vessels leading up to her heart.
The scanner acquired by Sacramento HeartScan, the GE LightSpeed VCT, is the first of its kind available to patients in the Sacramento region. The 64-slice scanners are the fastest CT scanners on the market.
According to Bellinger, the scanner can help doctors better diagnose heart disease, lung cancer and other diseases of various internal organs. It also offers patients shorter exam times, quick results and less X-ray exposure.
The non-invasive 64-slice scanner rotates around the patient's body, while X-ray detectors produce cross-sectional images, or slices, of the heart and other vital organs. The scanner is capable of capturing 64 images with each rotation. Because it is much faster than the 16-slice scanner, it can produce more defined, three-dimensional images of the heart.
