Rehabilitation Institute Of Michigan Opens New Neuroscience Unit On January 25

DETROIT, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The Detroit Medical Center’s Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM) will celebrate the grand opening of its new Neuroscience Inpatient Unit with an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 from 4:00-6:00 p.m., at 261 Mack Ave., Detroit. The beautifully designed 26-bed unit is the only rehabilitation unit of its kind in Michigan dedicated to the treatment of neuroscience patients who require intensive medical and nursing management.

The 26-bed Neuroscience Unit offers patients a comprehensive and coordinated center for the treatment of brain injuries, stroke, nervous system, and other neuromuscular disorders. Within this unit, physicians, nurses and other professionals who specialize in neurological and neurosurgical disorders evaluate, treat and follow patients.

“What makes the Neuroscience Unit so effective for patients is that it serves as a one-stop facility where patients can see all sub-specialists in one convenient setting,” said Terry Reiley, president, RIM. “Through our affiliation with the Detroit Medical Center, our patients have unlimited access to a variety of sub-specialists including neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroanatomists, neuropsychologists, speech pathologists, social workers, rehabilitation specialists, and specialty nurses. This team approach offers the most comprehensive care possible,” added Reiley.

RIM is a national leader in the field of neuroscience and neurotrauma research, and treats more complex brain injury and stroke patients than any other program in the state. RIM’s brain injury program has earned the rare distinction of being federally designated by the National Institute on Disability Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) as one of only 16 centers of excellence in the U.S. for the treatment of brain injuries. In addition, data shows RIM’s stroke patients improved at a higher rate per day, achieved a higher functional status at discharge, and had a shorter length of stay, compared to benchmark groups of Midwestern and national rehabilitation facilities.

The state-of-the-art Neuroscience Unit features 26 private and semi- private suites, complete with home-like amenities including private baths with roll-in showers, cable TV and desktop workstations. The suites are large and offer families a comfortable place to sleep for overnight visits, or to just spend time with patients. The new unit also includes a therapy gym, dining and kitchen area, and a training apartment to help patients learn the skills necessary to return home as quickly and independently as possible.

With its 94-bed hospital and numerous outpatient therapy sites located throughout southeast Michigan, Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM) is one of the nation’s largest hospitals specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation. The Institute is home to many innovative programs, including the Southeastern Michigan Traumatic Brain Injury System (SEMTBIS), one of only 16 federally designated centers of excellences in the U.S. for the treatment and research of brain injuries, and the Center for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery, a world-class facility designed to implement and study innovative treatments that may result in some level of improvement in persons with injured or damaged spinal cords. A member of the Detroit Medical Center, RIM also serves as the teaching and clinical research site for Wayne State University School of Medicine.
