Scholarship funds from the Helen K. Persson Nursing Education Endowment, the Good Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Fund, the Andy Barowsky Scholarship, the Charles Norton Adams Nursing Endowment, the Peter & Elinka Ordway Nursing Scholarship Endowment, and the Abraham and Betty Sommer Nursing Scholarship Endowment are all administered by PHF. Over $700,000 has been awarded to 333 individuals since the program began in 2002. Each recipient agrees to work in Palm Beach County as a healthcare professional for each year of scholarship received.
Each student also participates in PHFs Mentoring program which has helped students remain focused throughout their training up to graduation day. A mentor may also identify students facing financial crises who could benefit from the Foundation’s emergency fund for scholarship recipients. “There are many reasons healthcare students might benefit from being assigned a mentor,” says Stan Collemer, Director of Special Projects. “More non-traditional students are entering nursing programs. They’re older, they may be single parents, they may be employed, as well as attend school, English may not be their first language, and there is a shortage of professional role models,” he added.
$230,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS
To begin the process, a student must complete an application and write an essay detailing experiences which inspired them to enter the nursing profession. The application and essay are then reviewed by a sixteen member committee of Palm Beach County leaders. Scholarships are awarded based on students’ essays, financial need, and academic success. Recipients must maintain a 2.5 or higher GPA to retain their scholarship.
