Metropolitan Jewish Health System Vice President Reaches Nurse Educators Through Writing

NEW YORK, Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Metropolitan Jewish Health System (MJHS) congratulates Marilyn Hecker, Vice President of Staff Development, for contributing a chapter to a new nursing textbook titled The Role of the Preceptor - A Guide for Nurse Educators and Clinicians. The textbook will be published in August 2005.

Hecker's chapter explores the use of preceptorships for newly hired Home Care nurses. The preceptorship is a period of practical experience and training for a student, supervised by an expert in the field. "A well- developed preceptor program will create a milieu in which the orientees' self- esteem can be enhanced, contributing positively to their feeling of job satisfaction," said Hecker. Hecker has been with MJHS since 2002, when she was hired as Director of Staff Development, Home Care. She has over 20 years of experience in the nursing field.

Special initiatives like Hecker's happen frequently at MJHS, which is well known for its innovative approach to nursing and other aspects of health care, with staff development a particular strength. Just a few examples: MJHS trained home care staff to be sensitive to cultural and religious differences; the system received a $70,000 grant for special Palliative Care training in skilled nursing facilities; and MJHS provided its nurses with the opportunity to pursue a Master of Science in nursing from C.W. Post of Long Island University.
