Dermspectra To Conduct Collaborative Research With Mayo Clinic On Automated Total Body Digital Skin Imaging

TUCSON, Ariz., Dec. 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- DermSpectra’s Total Body Digital Skin Imaging System will be studied at Mayo Clinic to collect and analyze patient and dermatologists’ perceptions of the impact of digital skin imaging in skin documentation and medical decision making, as well as their experiences using the system.

DermSpectra Total Body Digital Skin Imaging System enables physicians to monitor critical skin changes over time (including benign and malignant lesions, eczema, psoriasis, and skin eruptions) to ensure the most accurate medical assessment and health outcomes. The advanced medical technology modernizes the way physicians visually capture and compare skin changes by rapidly providing objective, high-definition images to aid in the early detection of skin cancers and other skin conditions.

James Yiannias, M.D., dermatologist and associate medical director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation is the principal investigator of the pilot research.

“Mayo Clinic’s Center for Innovation is collaborating with us to assess the patient experience and help guide improvements on the operation of the DermSpectra digital imaging system to further enhance patient care,” said Karleen Seybold, chief executive officer of DermSpectra.

“We are excited to have this study done at Mayo Clinic, given the high incidence of skin disease in Arizona,” said Richard Carmona, M.D., 17th U.S. Surgeon General and DermSpectra board member. “We look forward to further advancing precision medicine in a field that could greatly benefit from standardized high-resolution imaging acquisition, secured data storage, efficient delivery of images, and an intuitive interface for medical providers and patients. With the number of skin cancers increasing to more than an astounding 4.9 million cases treated a year, it is crucial for physicians to have an effective tool to optimize skin surveillance and lesion monitoring in order to aid in early detection of skin diseases.”
