OAKLAND, Calif., Sept. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The California Nurses Association and the National Nurses Organizing Committee is sending its first delegation of RN volunteers to the Hurricane Katrina disaster area on Tuesday, Sept. 6, and is receiving high demand from across the region for more large groups of RNs. The first delegation of nurses is arriving in Jackson, Miss. today and will board a bus from the Jackson Airport heading for Wiggins at 9:00 p.m. Central Time today.

Donors can make tax-deductible, secure online contributions through the CNA website at www.calnurses.org, then by clicking on the Hurricane Katrina link. Companies interested in donating services should contact CNA by calling 510-273-2246.

A group of 22 nurses from California, Arizona, and Ohio is traveling Tuesday to Stone County Hospital in Wiggins, Miss., a small facility 40 miles north of Gulfport, to help the overburdened and overwhelmed staff care for evacuees and other victims of Katrina. They will be flying into Jackson, Miss., then riding by bus to the hospital.

Meanwhile, more requests for large numbers of RNs are coming in from Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Hundreds of CNA and NNOC members and other RNs from across the U.S. have responded to calls from CNA to assist with the disaster relieve and are ready to go direct medical care to Katrina victims.

CNA is asking the public, the business community, the airline industry, and the ground transportation industry to donate money or services to sponsor these RN volunteers and help pay for their travel, housing, food, and medical supplies.
