Ethicon Products To Sponsor Seven Live Telesurgeries At Hernia Repair Meeting

SAN DIEGO, Calif., Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- ETHICON Products, a division of ETHICON, a Johnson & Johnson company, today announced it is sponsoring seven live telesurgeries featuring the most common techniques for hernia repair. Scheduled for Friday, February 11, 2005, this event marks the first time seven current live surgeries will be conducted at the American Hernia Society's annual meeting.

Each live telesurgery will feature one of the most common hernia repair techniques -- Shouldice Repair, Lichtenstein Repair, Kugel repair, "plug" repair, the PROLENE* polypropylene Mesh Hernia System (PHS) and two laparascopic repairs that feature the company's latest edition to it's product line, ULTRAPRO* Partially Absorbable Lightweight Mesh.

Surgeons will have the unique opportunity to view several common repair techniques and compare and contrast them with the repair that they are currently doing. Each telesurgery will feature a leading surgeon live from their facility and a surgeon-moderator at the meeting. Attendees will be able to interact with the surgeon and ask questions regarding the technique.

ETHICON Products will feature two of their hernia repair mesh products. The PROLENE polypropylene Mesh Hernia System (PHS) is a preshaped three- dimensional device constructed of an onlay patch connected by a mesh cylinder to a circular underlay patch. It is used to reinforce or bridge inguinal hernia deficiencies to provide extended support during and following wound healing.

Using absorbable material, thin filament size and large pore construction, ULTRAPRO Mesh is currently the only mesh in the US that incorporates all three aspects of true lightweight design. ULTRAPRO Mesh provides for reduced tissue contracture as compared to traditional heavyweight mesh for more abdominal wall compliance.

PROLENE Mesh and ULTRAPRO Mesh are single use devices. If used on infants, children, women who may become pregnant or others with the potential for significant growth, doctors should note that the patch will not stretch significantly as the patient grows. Potential adverse reactions are those typically associated with surgically implantable materials, which include infection potentiation, inflammation, adhesion formation, fistula formation and extrusion.
