Airlines Roll Out Whopper Fare Sales as Demand Drops

USA Today -- AirTran on Tuesday announced a nationwide fare sale. That's not unusual move for any airline during the winter: Nearly all carriers do this to stimulate demand during a typically slow season. What is unusual, however, is that AirTran's fare sale extends through the rest of spring, all of summer and into the fall. Typically, winter sales cover only the slower winter and early spring period –- not summer, which is a peak period for most airlines. The Associated Press calls AirTran's sale "a sign of great uncertainty about demand for air travel this year amid the deep U.S. recession."
