AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Privately held On-X® Life Technologies Inc., whose mechanical heart valves have been implanted in more than 150,000 patients in over 90 countries, announced today that results from an independent, 50-year retrospective study show that On-X mechanical heart valves have “the lowest incidence of valve thrombosis” among the eight different valves that were studied.
The study results (“Valve Thrombosis, Pannus and Mechanical Valve Design: A 50-Year Learning Curve”) were presented from the podium at “ASCVTS’14” in Istanbul, Turkey, by Mervyn A. Williams, M.D., Provincial Hospital, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Data relating to 7,300 valves used in five healthcare institutions between 1963 and 2013 were reviewed, and eight different valves were studied. The patients came from poorly anticoagulated communities where thrombotic complications were common, thus unmasking the true potential for thrombosis.
“These robust, long-term data fortify the fact that the On-X aortic valves are unique among all other mechanical heart valves. On-X heart valves are the result of a breakthrough in medical-grade carbon technology, which we call On-X pure pyrolytic carbon. In addition to providing a more thromboresistant surface, the comparatively high strength of pure On-X carbon has enabled On-X LTI to make significant valve design changes that have resulted in a prosthesis that acts more like a natural valve in its treatment of blood,” said Clyde Baker, CEO of On-X Life Technologies.
Clinical studies have documented that On-X valves do not produce the turbulence and blood damage commonly produced by other mechanical heart valve prostheses and, therefore, significantly reduce the potential for life-threatening blood clots.
