University of Chicago Hospitals Selects MedQuist For Speech Recognition Solution

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J., Feb. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The University of Chicago Hospitals radiology department did not take the selection of a new system for its radiologists lightly. The hospital, which was named in the U.S. News & World Report 2005 “Best Hospitals” issue (July 18, 2005), embarked on an exhaustive due-diligence process lasting more than a year. Their research culminated in the hospital’s purchase of MedQuist’s SpeechQ for Radiology(TM) speech recognition solution, which their attending radiologists, residents and fellow physicians will begin using in 2006.

Under the direction of Dr. Richard Baron, the radiology department’s chairman, the hospital has significantly upgraded the department over the past several years to better meet the needs of the patients and their referring physicians. “With SpeechQ for Radiology, the radiologists can dictate and authenticate the clinical report while the patient’s image is displayed -- all in one step,” says Dr. Baron. “It also integrates with our Philips iSite(TM) Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) which streamlines the workflow for our radiologists. Radiologists no longer have to wait for reports to be transcribed and returned to them for their signatures, shortening the time it takes for the ordering physician to receive their final report.”

“Many of our patients travel from outlying areas to meet with primary care or specialist physicians, and they are often treated for complex conditions. If their physician orders a radiology exam, we strive to perform that exam while the patient is already here,” explains Sanju Abraham, Ph.D., assistant director, Radiology Imaging Information, Management Services. “SpeechQ for Radiology will allow us to provide the patient’s physician with the finalized report more quickly. Decreasing this turnaround time is another important step toward UCH’s goal of staying at the forefront of medicine.”

“We are very pleased that such a prestigious facility, and the only Illinois hospital to ever be included in the U.S. News & World Report’s Honor Roll, selected MedQuist as their speech recognition provider,” says Scott Bennett, MedQuist senior vice president of Sales and Marketing. “MedQuist provides University of Chicago Hospitals several unique benefits with a solution that no other vendor can offer - a second generation speech recognition system with the industry leading Philips SpeechMagic(TM) engine and unsurpassed workflow flexibility.”
