CAMDEN, N.J., March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Christopher T. Olivia, M.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of The Cooper Health System, announced today that John P. Sheridan, Jr., one of New Jersey’s most respected attorneys and former Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Transportation, will join the management team at Cooper in Camden on July 1, 2005 as Senior Executive Vice President.

Sheridan has been a partner at Riker Danzig Scherer Hyland & Perretti LLP since 1985 where he led the firm’s government affairs department. During his tenure he served in several management capacities including Co-Chairman of the firm, Chairman of the Management Committee and member of the Executive Committee. The firm is among the largest and most respected in New Jersey.
Prior to becoming a partner at Riker, Sheridan served as Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Transportation and a cabinet member for NJ Gov. Thomas H. Kean.

Sheridan’s duties will include assisting the Board of Trustees, the Chairman of the Board and the President/Chief Executive Officer of Cooper in achieving the strategic goals of the Hospital, the Medical School and Cooper Hospital’s external environs, including the urban redevelopment and expansion projects and the financing and funding of such goals and projects.

John P. Sheridan, Jr. is a senior partner in the firm of Riker, Danzig, Scherer, Hyland & Perretti LLP which he joined in May 1985. He is chairman of the management committee and a member of its executive committee. His practice is concentrated principally on governmental affairs, including representation of clients in legislative and administrative agency matters, health care, real estate development, and environmental law.
Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Sheridan served in the Cabinet of Governor Thomas H. Kean as Commissioner of Transportation of the State of New Jersey from May 1982 to May 1985. During this period, he also served as Chairman of the Board of the New Jersey Transit Corporation, New Jersey’s statewide transit agency.
Prior to joining the Kean Administration, Mr. Sheridan was a partner in the Princeton law firm of McCarthy and Hicks. He joined that firm as an associate in 1974 when the firm was known as Cahill, McCarthy and Hicks. He was engaged in general practice including litigation, appeals, real estate and corporate law. He also served during this eight-year period as counsel to the NJ Senate. He served as co-counsel to the Apportionment Commission of the State of New Jersey in 1981 which was responsible for legislative redistricting and as co-counsel to the 1992 New Jersey Congressional Redistricting Commission. Mr. Sheridan served as a member of the New Jersey Supreme Court Committee on Civil Practice from 1977 to 1979.
Prior to joining McCarthy and Hicks, Mr. Sheridan served in Governor William T. Cahill’s administration in various capacities. As Deputy Attorney General from January 1973 to February 1974, he served as Counsel to the Commissioner of Transportation and the Commuter Operating Agency. From March 1972 until January 1973 he was Assistant Counsel to Governor Cahill and was responsible for the Departments of Health, Insurance, Transportation and the Public Utilities Commission. Prior to that he held several different assignments as a Deputy Attorney General. From June 1971 to March 1972 he was assigned as counsel to the Chancellor of Higher Education, the Department of Higher Education and the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. From October 1970 to June 1971 he served as counsel to the Department of Labor and Industry and he also represented other State agencies in contested cases before the Civil Service Commission.
He was graduated from St. Peter’s College in 1964 and from Rutgers Law School in 1967.
He served a judicial clerkship with the Honorable Theodore I. Botter, Superior Court, and was with the U. S. Army from 1968 to 1970.
Mr. Sheridan is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and he is a member of the New Jersey Bar Association. He is admitted to practice law in New Jersey before both the Federal and State courts and the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.
He serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Carrier Clinic, a not-for-profit psychiatric hospital in Belle Mead, New Jersey, the Board of Trustees of New Jersey Future, the Board of Trustees of the Edison Preservation Foundation, the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Alliance for Action, the Board of Regents of St. Peter’s College and the Advisory Board of the Voorhees Transportation Center. In 2003, he served as a member of Governor McGreevey’s Blue Ribbon Transportation Commission.
A resident of Skillman in Montgomery Township, Somerset County, he is married to the former Joyce Mitchko and is the father of four sons, Matthew, Mark, Daniel and Timothy.
