September 28, 2011 Bar Harbor, Maine – Husson University will be offering Masters of Business Administration (MBA) classes at The Jackson Laboratory beginning Jan. 17.
The arrangement calls for the College of Business to provide Laboratory employees and Bar Harbor-area residents the opportunity to earn an MBA degree on site, said Dr. Tom Hutchison, Husson executive director of academic affairs and director of the School of Business and Management.
Hutchison explained, “Students will be able to complete the MBA degree in two to three years through a combination of online classes and classes taught on site. We have designed this program so students will not need to travel to our Bangor campus for any coursework.”
Mae Landesman, senior director of human resources at The Jackson Laboratory, said, “As an employer we are committed to on-the-job employee development as well as encouraging employees to pursue their academic education.”
Landesman noted that the Laboratory has offered a tuition reimbursement program to employees since 1998, with 68 employees currently benefiting from this program today. “We see working with Husson University as a wonderful opportunity to further support our commitment to providing more accessible educational opportunities for employees,” she said. “This is an innovative example of the educational and nonprofit sectors collaborating for the benefit of the citizens of Maine.”
In addition to offering the MBA classes to Jackson employees in Bar Harbor, Landesman said, the institution plans to use distance education technologies so that employees at its Sacramento, Calif., location can also participate. Residents of the Bar Harbor area may also participate in the program, space permitting.
Dr. Ron Nykiel, Dean of the College of Business, stated, “We deeply value this partnership with The Jackson Laboratory to bring an MBA degree to the Lab as well as to those on Mount Desert Island.”
