The growing biotech industry may help California’s economic recovery, according to one report, and local leaders are trying to ensure that Davis and the Sacramento region are part of the boom. “Today, California’s biotechnology firms employ an estimated 100,000 workers. By 2015, the industry may employ as many as 250,000 workers,” says a report by an occupational research unit of the state’s Employment Development Department. The June report was released Tuesday on the Internet with the intention of “helping to explain what [the biotech] industry means to California.” Biotechnology creates techniques and procedures that use living organisms and their components to make products, according to the report. The technology has spread to a range of industries, it says, and needs workers.
