Promise V. Risk: The Stem Cell Meeting In San Francisco

June 27, 2005 -- Walking through the hotel hallways during the International Society for Stem Cell Research meeting, one can see the promise of things to come. It feels like Hilton Head in the late 90s, when everyone flocked to the South Carolina coast in the late fall. There is lots of excitement in the air, but, this time, much of the research is being done overseas because of two problems in the US: religion, of course, but perhaps even more importantly, the fear of liability from the (all but inevitable) side effects.
