Leading-edge GammaFIT design offers affordability, scalability for global customers
OTTAWA, June 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ - Nordion Inc. (TSX: NDN) (NYSE: NDZ), a leading provider of products and services to the global health science market, today announced it will be unveiling details of its new Flexible Irradiation Technology (GammaFIT) modular irradiator system. The technical presentation of the design will take place at the 2011 International Meeting on Radiation Processing (IMRP), the biennial gathering for members of the International Irradiation Association.
With its commercial release to the market anticipated later this year, the GammaFIT system will be an industry innovation. This new system will deploy a modular design that provides end users the flexibility to add to and configure the irradiator to grow and change with their processing volume and needs. Using a single shield design, Nordion’s gamma experts have created four configurationsresearch and development, tote, carrier and palletto serve a wide range of product sterilization needs, from medical devices to food to cosmetics.
“Nordion has been a world leader in gamma sterilization for more than 40 years, and our investment in this innovative new product demonstrates our continued strong commitment to this industry,” said Peter Covitz, Nordion’s Senior Vice President of Innovation. “Many smaller companies are discouraged from entering the sterilization business because of the large initial capital investment in equipment. We believe the GammaFIT is a more accessible product that can open up new markets for Nordion, particularly in Latin-America and Asia.”

Nordion is hosting the Gala dinner and is organizing a tour for delegates at its state-of-the-art Canadian Irradiation Centre, located just north of Montreal in Laval, Quebec. Nordion staff will also give a series of presentations on various technical and business topics related to irradiation, including low-temperature irradiation, pharmaceutical product processing, lifecycle management for Cobalt-60, and new irradiator designs and emerging applications. About gamma sterilization:
Gamma sterilization is commonly used to irradiate a wide range of products and materials, from fruit and spices to pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. It works by exposing the product to radiation from a Cobalt-60 source for a predetermined period of time. This kills insect pests and reduces harmful bacteria such as Salmonella and E.coli.
