Approximately 20 million Americans -- one in nine adults -- are estimated to have chronic kidney disease, and most don’t even know it. Chronic kidney disease is a progressive condition in which the kidneys are unable to function effectively. People at increased risk for this debilitating disease include those who suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure, or both; those who have a family history of kidney disease; and those who are over the age of 65. For example, anemia, or low concentrations of oxygen-carrying red blood cells, is an important and often overlooked symptom of chronic kidney disease. Anemia also is a potentially debilitating condition that results in excessive tiredness, which can gradually worsen, and a diminished ability to carry out previously routine activities.
