Johns Hopkins University Shares Clinical Findings Around The World Using Sonic Foundry’s Mediasite

MADISON, Wis., Feb. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sonic Foundry(R) Inc. , a leader in automated rich media communications technology, today announced that Johns Hopkins Center for Clinical Global Health Education (CCGHE) is using Mediasite(TM) and its packaged rich media hosting services to help healthcare providers around the world learn the latest advancements in the treatment of debilitating infectious diseases, like HIV and SARS.

As part of its program the CCGHE webcasts its latest medical and research discoveries to healthcare providers in remote global locations, like India, Thailand and Africa. By communicating findings from Johns Hopkins’s physicians both live and on-demand over the Web, Johns Hopkins is helping clinicians, nurses and aides treat debilitating diseases more quickly and effectively, prevent further spread of contagious illnesses and, most importantly, save lives.

Using Mediasite to Communicate Critical Information across Time Zones

Countries with the largest burdens of HIV, tuberculosis, malaria and other infectious diseases have the fewest number of trained health care workers. The primary goal of the CCGHE is to provide long-term clinical training through distance education programs that give these healthcare providers access to the expertise of Johns Hopkins clinical faculty.

Using Sonic Foundry’s portable Mediasite ML Rich Media Recorder and content hosting and management services, the CCGHE was able to mediasite critical training content within a matter of weeks -- not months, as it had experienced before with an in-house solution.

“Sonic Foundry’s turnkey approach enabled us to roll out our distance education program quickly and without the burden of hosting the content ourselves,” said Dr. Robert Bollinger, who spearheads Johns Hopkins Center for Clinical Global Health Education and is a renowned infectious disease specialist. “It has been so successful that we are now using it for sharing information with physicians all over the globe and have just recently launched a new eLearning program for our own remote faculty and staff.”

The Power of Rich Media -- Integrated Audio, Video and Graphical Content over the Web

Using Mediasite, the CCGHE is able to conduct live, interactive rich media webcast presentations by medical professionals within Johns Hopkins Division of Infectious Diseases. Each grand round session includes three case presentations. Participants interact with presenters by sending questions in real time and are able to respond to presenter queries through polling capabilities. Each session is archived for convenient on-demand viewing and future reference. In addition, in situations when the Center conducts training via its video conferencing system, it also mediasites the training to provide live and on-demand desktop access to the entire meeting, including all audio/video and visual components.

Expanding Mediasite throughout the Organization

Since first introduced to Mediasite last year, Johns Hopkins is continuing its rich media transformation, while expanding applications that further advance its research, education and clinical services leadership position throughout the world.

For instance, at Johns Hopkins Medicine Interactive, Assistant Director Alexander Nason is developing a centralized portal for online learning content for Johns Hopkins Medical faculty, staff and medical students. He will use Mediasite to capture faculty video conference presentations delivered around the globe. Nason says that because Mediasite has proven so valuable, other groups at JH have begun to identify other areas where it can be utilized.

“There are so many different areas where we can grow using Mediasite,” said Dr. Bollinger. “As an institution at the forefront of medical and scientific research, having a communications tool like this can make the difference in sharing our knowledge in a much bigger way, allowing us to improve so many more lives,” he explained. “We have only just begun to tap its capabilities.”
